EYES OF THE INNOCENT (Roush) Out of the darkness And straight into the light Comes this tiny miracle of life Breaking the silence With a primal cry of life As he opens up his little eyes We could live in harmony Could find a little peace between us If we could see Through the eyes of the innocent Eyes that see no evil Eyes without experience Eyes that were never taught to see Eyes of the innocent Coming into focus As his world is taking form Each moment getting brighter than before A perfect conscience In a perfect little mind Free from all the tarnish of mankind We could live in harmony Could find a little peace between us If we could see Through the eyes of the innocent Eyes that see no evil Eyes without experience Eyes that were never taught to see Eyes of the innocent Solo Through the eyes of the innocent Eyes that see no evil Eyes without experience Eyes that were never taught to see The eyes of the innocent The eyes of the innocent You'll never be innocent The eyes of the innocent

STRANGER IN THIS HOUSE (Roush) Father What have you done? You crossed that line between A father and a son Broken promise And broken trust Just who is this stranger you've become? Father Where did you go? This is not the man i used to know Something's changed inside I see it in your violent eyes Father what have you done now? There's a stranger in this house Who abused your only child? The stranger in this house is you It's you Tired Of your apologies Another string of empty words to me 'Cause nothing you can say Can take what you have done away Father listen to me now There's a stranger in this house Father can't you figure out? The stranger in this house is... You said you'd never let me down You lied to me And to yourself Just what have you done now? Solo When reason turns to rage Just how far will you go today? Father what have you done now? There's a stranger in this house Who abused his only child? There's a stranger in this house Father What have you done? Where did you go? Oh, the stranger in this house Is you

Forever Gone 04:16
FOREVER GONE (Roush) Long ago but not so far away You and I were living day by day Years gone by and there's no words to say Just what happened to our yesterday Promises we tried so hard to keep Took their toll and we were in too deep You and I we knew it wouldn't last We rode the sailing ship sinking fast You and I we sailed away And took our dreams along Now those dreams have washed away Just where did we go wrong There's no point in crying No sense in holdin' on 'Cause what we thought would last forever is forever gone All the love we found together is forever gone Forever gone Hard to think that there was once a time When I was yours and you were mine Hand in hand and eye to eye We said, "I do" and then we said, "Goodbye" 'Cause what we thought would last forever Is forever gone All the love we found together is forever gone Forever gone Gone is the love we had left in history Forever gone Gone are the dreams we shared Forever they will be Forever gone Though we tried our best to stay together Gone What was meant to last forever is forever gone Solo There's no point in crying No sense in holding on There's no use in trying When all the love is gone 'Cause what we thought would last forever Is forever gone All the love we found together is forever gone Forever gone Gone is the love we had left in history Forever gone Gone are the dreams we shared Forever they will be Forever gone Whoa oh, Whoa oh, oh, oh, oh, oh Gone are the dreams Gone is the love What we had is gone Forever

BEFORE THE STORM (Roush) Looking out my window I face a dark and dreary day Feel the violent wind blow I close my eyes and turn away Before the storm Sitting in the darkness All my thoughts have turned to grey Can't erase the sadness I close my eyes and drift away Before the storm I hear the sound of fallin' rain Downpour on my life again I'm saturated in a sea of pain It seems no matter what I try I can't let go and leave behind The storm of problems heavy on my mind Will the sun shine again? Will this darkness ever end? How long do I have to sit inside this empty room and wait Before the storm? Solo 1 Before the storm The sun will never shine again This storm will never end Forever I will wait.... NO!!!!!!! Never felt this way before I just can't take it anymore You know I've got to make a stand And face the storm Solo 2 I pull myself together I gather all my strength inside You know it's now or never I won't be going down this time Solo 3 And as I slowly gain control I feel the darkness lose it's hold And suddenly I know The sun will shine again Soon this storm will end Elated I awake I open my eyes and see A brand new day in front of me No longer will I ever fear the dark of day 'Cause I know I made it through the rain I made it through the rain I know that I can make it through... The storm

Get Up 04:31
GET UP 30 years and you're feeling old Your fire's slowly dying What ever happened to your dreams of gold All the things you left behind? You used to be an optimistic man Now time has got you down But if you give it everything you can You can turn your life around (So get up) So get up and make it happen Nobody rides for free (nobody rides for free) Get up and live again Get up, get on your feet Stop talking 'bout, "What might have been" Start talking 'bout, "What will be" It's not to late to begin again And change the life you lead You can go a different way Before your time runs out Why put it off until another day When you can do it now? (So get up) Get up and make it happen Nobody rides for free (nobody rides for free) You can live again if only you believe (Get up) Stop sitting in depression Looking for sympathy (nobody rides for free) Get up and dream again Get up, get on your feet So you just sit there Wasting all your time Don't watch the world go by Get on Get out Get up Solo (Get up) So get up and make it happen Nobody rides for free (nobody rides for free) You can live again if only you believe (Get up) Stop sitting in depression Looking for sympathy (nobody rides for free) Get up and dream again Get up, get on your feet Get up Get up Get up and make it happen Get up Ohhh get out and take some action Get up Don't waste away your time Get up Don't watch the world go by

THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH (Roush) Just a boy upon my grandfather's knee Wide-eyed and innocent, young and naive With a twinkle in his eye and a smile upon his face He told me of a special place so many dreams away... He called it the fountain, the wellspring of life A wonderland of fantasy where no one ever dies Few have ever found it Many more have tried Searching through the deepest depths Sailing far and wide Somewhere beyond the wishing well Around the river's bend Through the twilight And at the rainbow's end The fountain of youth Is waiting for you All your wildest dreams Are waiting to come true Just a young man standing by my grandfather's bed Couldn't help remembering those words he said I screamed, "Where is your fountain? Where is your youth? If you could only tell me I would bring it all to you! 'Cause I've been beyond the wishing well Around the river's bend Through the twilight And at the rainbow's end No fountain of youth Was waiting for me is it really true Or just a fallacy?" Fountain of youth Tell me where are you? Is there anything to save us from the hands of doom? Yeah... Solo Are we just a swim away from paradise Or a drink away from eternal life? Now here I stand with my own grandson in hand And I tell him the story again I pull him to my knee And as I look him in the eye That same familiar twinkle Makes me realize The fountain of youth Is inside of you And you pass it on To everyone you knew The fountain of youth Is found by few Just reach for your dreams and you may find it too Yeah Are we just a swim away from paradise Or a drink away from eternal life? Mmmm mmm Mmmm mmm

Dream 03:03
DREAM (Roush) Lying awake Afraid to sleep Your time is drawing near Silent you wait Afraid to see Beyond your final year Close your eyes and dream Spread your wings and fly Don't be afraid There's nothing to fear Don't you shed a tear It's over now The hour is here Heaven awaits you Set yourself free Just close your eyes and dream Close your eyes and dream Struggle to fight You're growing tired But still you're holding on Flickering light Is burning out Your spirit's passing on Close your eyes and dream Spread your wings and fly Don't be afraid There's nothing to fear Don't you shed a tear It's over now The hour is here Heaven awaits you Set yourself free Just close your eyes and dream Just close your eyes and dream Just close your eyes and... Dream

about

When the clock struck 12 to ring in the year 2019, I was playing an acoustic gig in Smithton, PA. I hardly had time to ponder the idea of it being a new year, much less realize that it's been 25 years since I wrote and produced "The Fountain of Youth" as my first full-length recording....well, almost...but more on that later.

Two weeks into the year, I was visiting a friend at his new house meeting his new baby. At one point we were checking out the basement and I just happened to remember that he had the only copy of that Jream CD from yesteryear somewhere in the plethora of his storage boxes.

See, we had transferred the original tapes to a CD way back on his "Cool Edit 97" program and he had misplaced the disc for many years. Since moving 3 years ago, he had a lot of that stuff still packed away.

He said, "Wow. If I had it at all, it would be in one of these boxes."

We talked a bit more, then he opened the top box and asked, "Was that called 'The Fountain of Youth'?"

I said, "You're kidding!".

He was not. The CD in question was sitting right on top of the pile. Weird.

I took it home, burned MULTIPLE copies and played it. Out came the past exactly as it was preserved and I slowly realized that what I was listening to was 25 years old this year. Fate? Maybe. But this music was already old before it was ever released. Allow me to elaborate:

I wrote "The Fountain of Youth" as a concept album, inspired by the music I enjoyed in my formative years. The writing and playing was heavily influenced by my former eighties guitar heroes.

Yeah, I was late to the party and just when I learned my guitar skills, they became obsolete. It took me a while to find the right singer/band to do these songs. By the time I did, it was too late. The scene had changed...literally, overnight. To sound like this in 1994 was the kiss of death (no Dokken pun intended). So I shelved all these songs and eventually formed Crushing Ground.

Back to the recording...

We rented a Yamaha 8-track portable studio for a month to record a 10 song demo tape. Halfway through, we realized there wasn't enough time to do it all, so we concentrated on the songs we knew best...and one I had just written since it was fresh.

I figured we would come back and add in all the songs at some point. But our singer moved to Georgia and grunge reared it's ugly head. The writing was on the wall. Jream was over.

When I built my own professional studio in 2006, I thought of rerecording the album properly with all the original tracks included. But the novelty of hearing these songs exactly as we left them so many years ago means more to me. They represent a time and place "So many dreams away"...just as it should be.

With the numerous outlets of eighties streaming channels out there now, this stuff is in flavor again. For some it never left. I have moved well beyond my fret-burning beginnings, but really enjoy listening back to this stuff many years removed.

In honor of the anniversary, I remastered all the tracks and cleaned up the stops and tape issues where I could, but purposely left the songs the way they were originally recorded in 1994.

Album Notes:

"The Fountain of Youth" is the entire life of a human being. It begins with a birth and ends with a death. It's a story of a boy who grows up looking for a magical place his grandfather used to talk about in bedtime stories. As he grows through hardships, falls in love and has kids of his own, then finally grandchildren, he understands what his grandfather meant. It's not a fictitious place at all, but something inside of you that you pass on to "Everyone you knew". He dies at the end of the disc with his family around him telling him there's "Nothing to fear". You flip the record (or tape at the time) and it's a new cycle of life with a new baby being born and the process continues over and over.
