BACK IN THE DAY (Roush) Well rise and shine at 6AM For newspaper delivering Run for the bus Cut through the yards We'll meet back here at 4 o'clock Well follow me 'round a dirt bend Hop on your bike Let's race again Skateboard a ride to our halfpipe We built from scratch in spare time Going BACK IN THE DAY When we used to play Oh, what I'd give For just one more chance To live... BACK IN THE DAY Engine engine number nine Pick a sport Now choose a side Football plans traced on our hands I'm going long in the backyard Come and see my baseball team If we win we go for ice cream A pickup truck and seven friends All riding in the truck bed Going BACK IN THE DAY When we used to play Oh, what I'd give For just one more chance To live... BACK IN THE DAY All these years later After all that I've done Well all I remember Is fun! Watch for cars I'll move the net Street hockey games at the dead end We'll play until it's dinner time Then back outside 'til the streetlights shine BACK IN THE DAY When we used to play Oh, what I'd give For just one more day To live... BACK IN THE DAY

FOREVER YOUNG AT HEART Hmmmm Born in New Brighton A twin in the cradle My brother never made it out alive And since that day I Learned to enjoy life Every second 'til the rug comes out from under In a house in Delmont Raised with 9 cousins I couldn't choose a better place to grow up So many neighbors Showed me the way to Squeeze every drop of fun out of my youth And no matter what they say my age is I still live like I'm... FOREVER YOUNG Playing in the summer sun FOREVER YOUNG Livin' just to have some fun FOREVER YOUNG FOREVER YOUNG AT HEART My ukulele and then a six-string I felt and inner voice was singing out The perfect words rolled Right off my tongue and I knew right then what I was all about 'Cause when I pick up my guitar and strum I still feel like I'm... FOREVER YOUNG Jumping puddles in the rain FOREVER YOUNG Dancing with no music playing FOREVER YOUNG Always acting half my age FOREVER YOUNG FOREVER YOUNG AT HEART "Who cares how old you are?" Hmmmmmmm "How young's your heart?" Well, until they put me six feet under I will live like I'm.... FOREVER YOUNG Soaking up the summer sun FOREVER YOUNG Livin' just to have some fun FOREVER YOUNG Singing at the top of my lungs FOREVER YOUNG FOREVER YOUNG AT HEART

small 03:35
small Kid on a big wheel Ridin' 'round the lawn His name's on the sidewalk Colored in with chalk A blade of grass between his thumbs He's blowing out a song Well I felt so free And I lived to large But I was still so... small Summer nights catchin' fireflies Right between our palms Kick-the-can then run as fast As you can in the dark Sleeping out and talking 'bout Our plans beneath the stars Well we were just kids And we talked so big Yet we we're still so... small small Catching crayfish under rock We were so small small Growing tadpoles in a jar We were so small With a whiffle bat and ball And every neighbor in the yard We were so small And we grew apart Well now we're adults...huh But have we forgot? The best parts of life are... small

TAPE & PAPER Imagination Took me anywhere I'd want to go All these years later Right to this day is still alive and well TAPE & PAPER Changed my whole world Lost myself in my creations TAPE & PAPER Magic Markers Colored in my darkest days A fascination Pulling ideas right out of thin air Some kind of magic Always made my sadness disappear TAPE & PAPER Changed my whole life Helped me live outside the lines TAPE & PAPER Magic markers Colored in my darkest nights Ooooh, oooh, oooh, oooh Somehow I found a secret place Where I could escape all my pain And build a better world with... TAPE & PAPER Homemade armor Shielding me from any harm A paper mache superhero Taking on the world with... TAPE & PAPER Somehow I found a secret place Where I could get away Get away

TROUBLE MAGNET Trouble on the day that I was born (But I crawled right through it) Then again at 3 years old (Though I walked out of it) Something told me deep inside This would be my life Never wanted to catch it's eye Couldn't help it like a moth to fire Drama follows me all my life No doubt about it I'm a TROUBLE MAGNET Trouble magnetic I'm trouble magnetic Look out! Broken bones when I was just a teen (Black eyes, bloody noses) Car crashes in my early twenties (Somehow came up roses) Well that's the story of my life Is it any wonder why I'm Trouble magnetic Everywhere I go Any place I step I'm trouble magnetic And I ain't learned my lesson yet No! Never wanted to catch it's eye From the frying pan into the fire The drama follows me all my life No doubt about it I'm a TROUBLE MAGNET Trouble magnetic Everywhere I go Any place I step I'm trouble magnetic And I ain't learned my lesson yet I'm trouble magnetic From the day that I was born 'Til my dying breath Look out!

TONES OF HOME Hmmmm Summer breeze I'm blowing in the wind My endless misdirection Has caught up with me again It's calling me back To reconnect No matter how much older I go back to the beginning Down the curve in the road Where the green grass grows Fresh flowers line the sidewalk to the door No matter where I go I hear the tones of home Calling me back Stepping inside in adolescent mind Over the creaks in steps To rooms just as I left them Familiar voices Call my name With faces somewhat different But eyes that shine the same Share laugh or maybe two Catch up on what's new Add some pages to The stories we all know No matter how I've grown I feel it in my bones These tones of home Down the curve in the road Where the green grass grows Fresh flowers line the sidewalk to the door I hear the tones of home Calling me back I feel it in my bones I'm where I belong How lucky to still go To this place called home Home

R.O.O.T. 03:58
R.O.O.T. What if I told you The sky was fallin' Would it change your tune? Or would you go on Living the same way Like you never knew? We're all riding in the same old boat Up the creek without a clue We keep repeating all the same old quotes We're all searchin' for the truth But we're runnin' out of time We're runnin' out of time What if I told you There's no tomorrow Would you act a fool? Or would you realize Our time is borrowed No matter what we do? We're all swimming in the same old bowl 'Round and round without a clue Keep on playing all the same old roles Always hiding from the truth That we're runnin' out of time We're runnin' out of time Chasin' the daylight But runnin' out of time Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock! So eat the bread And drink the wine "Tonight we ride!" For tomorrow we may die... 'Cause we're runnin' out of time We're runnin' out of time Still chasin' the daylight But runnin' out of time

Carpet Ride 05:33
CARPET RIDE (Westminster Chimes) When time flies When days are hard We act so tough We feel so small But through it all We were born... To ride Give me one more day To feel the sun on my face Endure the wind and the rain Feel all the love and the pain And give one more smile Another wink of an eye A single second to feel alive We're here today and gone tomorrow And all our joy turns into sorrow Let's have some fun Before it's said and done Until the rug comes out from under us Until the rug comes out from under us We are here to fly Give me one more year To shed my blood, sweat and tears And live without any fear Before we all disappear And give me one more life A second turn through the style I swear that I'll get it right this time We're here today and gone tomorrow Our happiness turns into sorrow Before we go Let's fill this world with love Until the rug comes out from under us Until the rug comes out from under us Let's ride! We were born to ride And we are here to fly Until the rug comes out from under us Until the light goes out in everyone Until the sun burns out for all of us Until the rug comes out from under us We are here to fly 'Til the wheels fall off We were born to ride

about

I used to work with an incredibly talented designer who inevitably moved on to a higher position elsewhere and left me with these parting words:

"Remember... if you are not having fun, STOP. Do something else."

This hilarious yet insightful line left a lasting impression on me.

Since my last record, I have been reliving my youth daily while helping to raise my woman's two kids. So many great memories of being a kid pop up in my head whenever I'm with them. It's been such a blessing to me that I decided to write a whole record about it. This is what you write when you've been hanging out with 12 year olds :)

A couple songs back on AF3 showed me how the drums can work with just an acoustic guitar. Well, on a record about "fun", what could be more fun than a full drum kit?

On the last full-length disc we had 80% cajon and 20% full drums... this time we flipped that ratio. Rather than worry about how I would perform all these songs live, we didn't limit ourselves in the studio. Recording and playing live are two different animals in my book. The whole point of recording in a studio is to capture a song in a way that a live show never could. If done right, it's experiencing the music in it's most valuable form. This disc is our tribute to all of the amazing, crafted records of my youth. That beautiful "craft" is quickly becoming a lost art form and part of the reason I still commit to writing full-length albums.

Hey, in this streaming obsessed culture, there's nothing wrong with releasing singles, it's certainly financially smarter. But it's one and done and the experience is over once you've heard the song. Albums are a slower burn. They take a bit of patience with each track resonating with audiences individually...and differently. You have a personal relationship with a full album. How deep that bond goes depends on how deep you are willing to explore it. There are so many records that I wasn't sure about at first that wound up being my favorite in a band's catalog.

I say all this to point out the VALUE in a full-length studio recording. If you like a few songs from a band's new release, take a chance and buy the ENTIRE CD. It's the gift that keeps on giving and may grow on you in ways you haven't yet imagined. It may also allow that band to grow with you for many years to come.

Okay, rant over. But I did want to offer a final special thanks to everyone who contributed to this album. First off, sharing this experience with Art has been one of the most rewarding musical experiences of my life. I am so lucky to have found a guy with such great instincts, ability and intellect to give each song it's own individual shine. Art is a gem and he really played his heart out on this disc. "ART OF THE Forever Young at HEART" indeed. Kudos Mr. Bartlow!

Next up is Nook Knidel. He went out of his way to play a ton of harp all over the disc and we wound up only using harp on one song. I am heartbroken that we couldn't make more of those parts work in the final mix. I only hope he would be open to working together on the next disc so I can write songs that better showcase his fantastic skills.

Gavin Moore for lending his voice to start this disc off properly! Thanks for being such a good sport giving me multiple takes and being the inspiration for this record. G-MAN ROCKS \m/ AWWW-YEAH-BOYEEEEEEEE! This release is exactly ONE day after his birthday! Perfect! Happy birthday Gavin!

Finally, Keith Uram for squeezing in at least one AMAZING bassline. MONSTER tone as always my friend. I only wish you could have accompanied more songs!

I am FOREVER grateful to all of you! Thanks for having FUN with me!
