LOVE IS KIND, LIFE IS CRUEL (Roush) Life can keep you silent But love can make you sing Life leaves you lost and stranded But love can give you wings Over and under Life spins you around Lifting you higher With nowhere to go but down But why does life have to be so cruel? And true love be so elusive? Love's patient Love's kind But sometimes... Life is cruel True love knows no boundaries And hearts are casualties For every soul who finds it's way A dozen more lost in the fray The loved or the lover Just one or the other Someone always seems to want it more But why does life have to be so cruel? And true love be so elusive? Love's bold Love is blind But sometimes... Life is cruel Tell me Why does life have to be so cruel? And true love be so elusive? Love's patient Love's kind Love's crazy And blind But sometimes... Life is cruel

UNDER A HALLOWED MOON (Roush) Past the meadows of mushrooms That blanket the ground Above all the orchards of apples abound Against the moonlight without a sound Flies the owl to hallowed ground Back to the roost Under a hallowed moon Where farm lands bloom Under a hallowed moon Hoo ooo (x3) In the hallowed hour Hoo ooo (x3) Under a hallowed moon Take a flight with him now At the midnight hour Circling farmland Flying for miles He's a watchin' upon the night A keeper of secrets deep in his eyes Back to the roost Under a hallowed moon Where farm lands bloom Under a hallowed moon Hoo ooo (x3) In the hallowed hour Hoo ooo (x3) Under a hallowed moon Beneath the moonlight sky The keeper of the night Will keep a watchful eye While you sleep tight Hoo ooo (x3) In the hallowed hour Hoo ooo (x3) Can't cha hear the sound? Hoo ooo (x3) Of the wise old owl Hoo ooo (x3) Under a hallowed moon

HOLES (IN MY HEART) (Roush) Got a hold Of my heart And you're never letting go Should have known From the start That I'd never fit the mold There are so many holes... In my heart Life's a long, lonesome road Gotta take a chance wherever it turns Love's a blessing And a curse Love's a shotgun Shooting where it hurts You and I were dancing ‘round the fire Trying not to get each other burned Now I've learned... There are holes in my heart That can't be filled by you And holes in my heart Left by you Hey, yeah When I saw In your eyes That your fire had been dying How I tried To keep a smile But I couldn't live a lie There are holes in my heart That can't be filled by you And holes in my heart Left by you You and I kept dancing round the fire Trying not to get each other burned But I’ve learned… The holes in my heart Can't be filled by you… Holes in my heart That can't be filled by you And holes in my heart Left by you Hey, yeah Got a hold of my heart And you left it full of holes

LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP (Roush) There you go Through the air Not a care in the world Here I am On the ground Waiting for you to land Catch a bolt of lightning If you dare And chase a new adventure But beware When your will is strong And it's hard to see Won't you take a look Before you leap? There you go In a rush To be somebody else Who are you Running from? Are you racing yourself? Climb another mountain Through the clouds Careful to remember It's a long way back down When your will is strong But your heart is weak If your world grows dark You can call on me But look before you leap Won't you look before you leap? Do what you please But promise me That you'll look before you leap When your will is strong And your heart is weak If your world grows dark You can count on me But look before you leap Mmmm Won't you look before you leap? Do what you please But promise me That you'll look before you leap

IN YOUR LIGHT (Roush) Electricity In your eyes Send your shivers Right down my spine I taste your sunshine Feel no rain Kiss my darkness And breathe out all my pain For I have come to bathe... In your light Let me back inside Let me in your light Bring me back to life In your light (2x) Chase my demons Erase my hate Pump your heartbeat Right through my veins Caress my sorrow Revive my soul Restore my power And mend these weathered bones For I have come to bask... In your light Let me stand inside Feel your warmth surround me Let me in your light Bring me back to life In your light (4X)

SILENT FRIEND (Roush) Companion at my feet Who's falling fast asleep Rest now my silent friend Lay down your weary head And let go of all your pain It's all okay I know you've grown so tired You won't be waking up this time Sleep my silent friend Until we meet again You've always been here for me But now it's time to sleep Though I knew this day would come It don’t make things easier Well, thank you for everything You taught me how to live And showed me a love so Unconditional I know you're leaving me But you have finally Earned your peace So sleep my silent friend Until we meet again You've always been here for me But now it's time to sleep I know you're oh so scared But there is nothing more to fear Sleep my silent friend Until we meet again You've always been here for me But now it's time to sleep My silent friend ‘Til we meet again You'll always be a part of me But now it's time to sleep My silent friend It’s time to sleep My silent friend It's time to sleep And rest in peace

ART OF THE HEART (Roush) You can wipe away the tears and stains But you can't erase away the heartache There's a lesson learned In every journey Of the heart An artist knows where not to paint A marksman counts the shots he takes And all wise men got That the hardest part Is the art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart The hardest part Well there are no shortcuts you can take There are no risks that are too great When it comes to love Won't you look before you jump? A poet cannot lie for long And a cowered never rights the wrong A visionary never questions why The hardest part Is the art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart The mind thinks what the mouth speaks The eyes see what the soul needs The hands touch what the arms love But the heart wants what the heart wants Art of the heart A rich man has no upper hand But a poor man knows just where he stands 'Til death do us part We're all prisoners of the heart The mind thinks what the mouth speaks The eyes see what the soul needs The hands touch what the arms love But the heart wants what the heart wants The art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart The art of the heart (The art of the heart) Is the hardest part Art of the heart

In My Keep 04:20
IN MY KEEP (Roush) Darlin' dry your eyes How I hate To see you cry There's too much pain outside Don't you let it Take your smile ‘Cause lonely is the night Across this great divide Don't let it bring you down 'Cause tonight You will be In my keep Well darlin' pay no mind To the lost And unkind We'll leave them all behind Out of sight Out of mind 'Cause lonely is the night Across this great divide Just lay your burdens down 'Cause tonight You will sleep In my keep It's not about all the places We could be 'Cause all that matters is The company we keep 'Cause lonely is the night Across this great divide 'Cause the broken always try To hurt you inside Don't you let them Bring you down 'Cause tonight You will be In my keep Yes tonight You will sleep In my keep

Empty 05:23
Show me an honest soul And I'll give you my word That I will try hard not to be cynical Show me your mercy Though I may not deserve it And I will die trying To be worthy I'm looking for somebody to believe in But coming up empty For somebody else to believe in me But coming up empty 'Cause I wanna be complete But I'm still so empty Show me how to trust Without any proof Give me the strength to follow through So easy to lose hope When the world is so cold So easy to lose my faith When nothing here's sacred I'm looking for somebody to believe in But coming up empty For somebody else to believe in me But coming up empty 'Cause I wanna be complete... Fill me up Fill me up Fill me up With your love With your love Hooo-hooo-ooo-ooo Ahhhhhh Why can't I believe in what I can't see? Can't I hold true to what I can't prove? Can’t I live free and not be so empty? Why can't I know love from what I can't touch? Can’t I be pure without needing more? Why can’t I believe and not be so empty? I'm still looking for somebody to believe in But coming up empty For somebody else to believe in me But coming up empty 'Cause I wanna be complete... But I'm still so empty Show me your mercy

BIRDS OF A FEATHER (Roush) Hmmm Mmmm We're all birds of a feather We're better together A child to a man A man on his own To weather each storm And fork in the road Right in and out This revolving door They all come and then go But you know Only the wounded lose hope And every day's a rebirth We can learn To float like a feather We're weightless together But separate we sink like a stone We wither apart And we've severed our heart strings But somehow they still hold a note ‘Cause we’re birds of a feather Mmmm Strangers to friends To strangers again Women to men Like feathers to wind Then out of the cold The rarest of birds Flies back into the fold But you know Only the wounded lose hope And every day's a rebirth We can learn To float like a feather We're weightless together But separate we sink like a stone We wither apart And we've severed our heart strings But somehow they still hold a note We’re all birds of a feather We're all birds of a feather Hmmm Hmmm Hoooo oooo hoooo We’re birds of a feather We’ll learn from each other.... To float like a feather We're weightless together But separate we sink like a stone We wither apart And we've severed our heart strings But somehow they still hold a note We're all birds of a feather We're all birds of a feather Mmmm We're all birds of a feather (Why does life have to be so cruel?) (And true love be so elusive?) We're all birds of a feather (Look before you leap) We're better together

about

Going into my third AF disc, I knew I wanted both "sides" to start out with a bass guitar. These songs were much more raw, organic and tribal than the previous releases, reminding me of Crushing Ground's "Rite of Passage" days. So I called up CG's old bass extraordinare Keith Uram and pitched him the idea. Within minutes of hearing the first track, he said, "I'm in!"

Not only did he agree to write bass tracks for the record, but he told me about this friend of his who played a mean "wooden box" and how much he would compliment these songs.

The box is called a cajon and the man who wields it is one Art Bartlow. We got together with Art and played him a few tracks. I sent him home with all of the songs burned to a CD to hear in their full wave forms.

A few weeks went by and Keith casually mentions, "I think Art has ideas for the songs." I said, "Great! How many do you think he wants to play on?" He replies, "I think ALL of them."

It was at that moment that I realized the release would be significantly delayed. Instead of the summer of 2017, we pushed it back to May of 2018. This gave me time to remix the whole album and Keith to acquire a new bow for his stand-up bass for an instrumental. All in all, he played electric bass, acoustic bass, ukulele bass and stand-up bass with a bow on the album.

Not to be outdone by K-man, Art even went further. From adding cajon, bells, chimes and lots of assorted percussion to using a full drum kit on two songs, Art really pulled out all the stops. The parts these two guys wrote for the record added mood, depth and texture to all the songs. I cannot thank them enough for their world-class efforts.

Conceptually, "Look Before You Leap" is about love and nature...and more specifically, the nature of love. It's about being careful with your heart through the highs and the lows of relationships, taking your cues from nature and learning to rediscover the beauty in life...even in loss.

Musically, it's somewhere between Americana and hard rock... on acoustic. There are swamp stomp moments mixed with classical passages and full on riff-heavy rock songs alongside simple lullabies.

This was easily one of the most rewarding musical collaborations of my life. I am eternally grateful these two gentlemen took this LEAP with me.
