about
I wrote this song nine years before it's release. It's about an unfortunate incident I experienced with a close friend of mine while we were on vacation. Simply put, the song is about going to prison for nine hours. It was the perfect time to resurface nine years later and of course it had to be track nine!
Despite our horrid ordeal, I had a lot of fun recapping this tale and sonically illustrating our demise. I used everything but the kitchen sink to make all the percussive noises you'd hear in a jail cell. I also included every sound bite known to man. From the jail sounds to car sirens, handcuffs, clocks and an old rotary telephone ring, I purposely went overboard here.
"Nine Hours" is similar in approach to "Man on a Bridge" from the last record. I don't write a lot of play-by-play story songs, but when I do, I go all out :)
lyrics
NINE HOURS IN VAN NUYS
(Roush)
Looking back it's all such a blur
It's like I'm recalling someone else's tale
And the trouble that started
On that late-summer night
When we took a ride
To Van Nuys...
(Now listen)
While on vacation
In California
Just two friends drivin'
One hour from a bed
Lost direction
And going slowly
When out of nowhere
Lights are flashing red
Nine hours in Van Nuys
I think we're losing our minds
In Van Nuys
A voice behind us
Is CHP
These borrowed wheels are
Ordered to a stop
License checked
Our breath is tested
Apprehended
With one of us in cuffs
(Ah no)
Nine hours in Van Nuys
One's stuck and one's doing time
They took away our rights
Looks like we're spending the night
In Van Nuys
Never could imagine this
Yet here we both sit
With one behind bars
And one left in a car
Whenever this nightmare finally comes to an end
Wake me up my friend
One call made
In desperation
To distant family
And friends are on their way
Bail is met
But we're still waiting
Lunch is served
Now we're free to drive away
...but we will not forget this day
And our nine hours in Van Nuys
Nine more than we would have liked
Now that we've both been released
Well I can guarantee
We're never gonna spend another hour
In Van Nuys
